Below refresher for Vets
and good basics for
New Players--its not perfect
but its some important basic quick info--Obviously
there are tons of ways to explain and better player
descriptions so here is QUICK LESSON
on RUGBY with U -tube Video
help
Here are three players
attacking the line of scrimmage vs no
defenders in a pass drill. Notice the best way to pass
is just a flick of hands --- no spin is ness.---
Notice everyone lines up on offense is about 4
yards to one side and 4 yards back
Basic Pull Pass - Ford Academy Training Tip #04
Here
(below) is what happens when a player is tackled .
The ball must be released when you hit
ground so the your teammate behind you
must decide to either pick up ball and run or cleanout the guy
from other team who is trying to pick up ball . If he
gets there early like number 10 does (at the end
of video) then he can just seal
over GRAB hold of his fallen teamate and form the ruck
(this makes a new line of scrimmage/down per say
)
All defenders
on the field then have to get onsides-- or
behind this ruck before they can try and
drive it over and the knock back a ruck
.
When it is sealed well by
a couple of guys. Most Defending teams conceed it
and just spread out to make the
next tackle and play defense. They
have to stay behind the last foot of this Ruck on Def
until someone on the offense picks up this ball
and runs/or passes.
(above)--Veterans check out how he
says the quicker you go down the less right
you have to the ball and the
quicker you get penalized for playing
it on the
ground
You'll notice
that the Rucks are really the only
blocking over the ball--The blocking (rucking
) done right is very easy low contact
really compared to football. KEY:get to your teammate
quickly when he goes down. In Rugby you really
pick and chose when you get hit --In
rucks -- tackles-- running the ball--- Much less really
then football. So if your a football player you'll find
rugby is actually easier to go after the tackle
because no one can block
you.
If you are on offense you can run,
pass back, kick, Or look to ruck / support
someone , Or spread out and get ready for
ball to come out to you.
Depending
on your position -Extreamly Basic Description of
positions
#1-#8 are the forwards who pursue
the ball ruck they also are ussually the big
guys we use for POWER
Runs "We call Black" They also hold up the scrums
when a ball is knocked on or passed forward. and they do
the lineouts when a ball goes out of bounds and has to
be re-played.
#9 or scrumhalf is ussually
the QB who picks up the ball and
passes it the most
.
#10 or flyhalf is
like a secondary QB who also passes calls
plays and kicks
sometimes.
#s 12,13, Are ussually
power and speed runners who tackle well and
guard the middle.
#s 11, 14 guard the
two sidelines and are the finishers ussually
fast players that can finish . They also
get punt returns -- They can punt at anytime
#15
They can insert offensively anywhere. He/She is
also our deep punt returner and finisher
for trys(scores)(A Try is 7 points like football
5 plus 2 for kick) fieldgoals are
3pts
These
are ussually the jobs of each player
but actually we should all take each
others places at times (This is
Rugby you never know what will happen) so
sometimes even the 15 may be
at #9 QB/Scrumhalf...
DEFENSE
you want to make sure you are doing your job
spreading the field communicating who you
are gaurding.
OFFENSE you can be anywhere since we have
ball. (Try and migrate toward your position though if you
are a back) ----EVEN BACKS THOUGH----- THE MOST
IMPORTANT THING IS NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE ON OFFENSE------ IF YOU ARE
THE CLOSEST PLAYER or TWO/THREE to YOUR TACKLED TEAMMATE
YOU MUST GO IN AND RUCK SUPPORT HELP THEM--SEAL them .Cleanout Demo - Ford Academy Training Tip #05
The Dutch/English say ---"THE BALL
IS GOLD" and always comes first . On offense you
can be anywhere do anything as long as we
have ball. Its better to have an extra
player in ruck QUICKLY than not enough players
THIS IS A small passage of play to watch
(below)---and it has MAULS ---Maul is when we keep
the ball up and drive it down field .
everyone pushes and ball should be
worked to the back for #9 .
Sometimes 9 drives too and it rolls
toward the side where preasure isn't . ALways
know where the ball is if you
can and be in control
HERE are some
game highlights -- you can watch to get an idea
on it put together------We don't play these guys
don't worry--This is the national team of New
Zealand playing the British Lions an
allstar team of national players from
Ireland ,England,
Scotland,Wales
